Design-Build Or Architect: Choosing The Right Path

One of the first questions a homeowner faces is who should design the home. Some projects are best guided by a single team from start to finish; others call for an outside architect with a particular point of view. Neither path is better in every case. Here is how we help clients decide which one suits their site and their style.

Two Paths To The Same Home

Both routes end in a well-built home. What differs is how decisions are made along the way, and who is responsible for them.

Design-Build: One Team, Start To Finish

With design-build, one team guides the project from the first site walk through construction. Design and construction decisions are made together, so questions of cost, schedule, and buildability are part of the conversation from the start rather than a surprise later on.

Working With An Architect

Some homeowners already have an architect they trust, or a strong vision that calls for a specific design voice. In that case we come in as the builder, working alongside the architect to bring the drawings to life as they were intended.

How To Decide

A few questions tend to point the way:

  • Do you already have an architect, or a design direction you want to protect?
  • How complex is the site? Steep or constrained lots benefit from a builder’s input early.
  • Would you rather have one team accountable for design and construction?
  • How involved do you want to be in coordinating the people on your project?

The right path is the one that fits your site, your style, and the way you like to work.

You Don’t Have To Choose Alone

Not sure which architect fits your project? Talking that through is part of our early conversations, and after decades of building modern homes in Laguna Beach, we have a good sense of who works well together.

What Stays The Same

Whichever path you take, the construction side doesn’t change: the same crews, the same oversight, and the same standard of finish.

Talk To Us Early

The best time to have this conversation is before you commit to a design. Tell us about your lot or your home, and we’ll help you think through which path makes the most sense.
